AHMEDABAD: The state government has claimed that there has been a 58% increase in the number of schools getting between 8.8 and 10 marks in its Gunotsav VIII grading exercise. The government claimed that of the 34,227 schools surveyed for Gunotsav-VIII in July, 3,209 got a grade of 'A+', meaning their scores were higher than 8.8.
Similarly, the government claims that more schools got between 7.5 and 8.7 marks and that the number of schools with an 'A' grade increased by 27%. While releasing the findings, Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, the education minister, said 22,436 schools got an 'A' grade in Gunotsav VIII, while the number was 17,653 last year.
The minister also said the number of schools getting B, C and D grades had fallen. The number of schools getting a 'B' grade, with a score between 6.2 and 7.4, fell to 7,629 in Gunotsav VIII from 12,556 in 2017.

Similarly, according to the government, the number of schools getting a 'C' grade dropped to 774 from 1,613 last year. Just 181 schools were graded 'D' this year from 300 in 2017. The drive was held for two days, from April 6 and 7, when officials inspected 34,227 schools across the state.
Chudasama said a school's final grade was based on self-evaluation by school authorities and the evaluation by an officer. This process is strict and encourages schools to be honest in self-evaluation. Schools where only self-evaluation was done, are graded on the self-evaluation and education outcomes. For the evaluation, 70% weight is given to education outcomes and 30% to school infrastructure and other parameters.
